Screwing With Scammers

Submitted by Jamie on Tuesday, 24 November 20094 Comments

I got this lovely scammer email today when I checked my email. It’s pretty thorough. I spent a good 15 minutes fucking with the scammer’s mind. It wasn’t a very good scammer. They registered their fraudulent domain, today, in their real name. Very few, if any, people still use the privacy of GoDaddy.com to cloak their identity online, and this fucker should have. First, here’s the email I was sent:

Being a domain expert for years, I did a WhoIS on koweuifrg.com. Tonight’s results:

It traced to Otto Long in TN. Even the email address seems like it’s a play on his name. ot24lo @ yahoo.com? Ok. This still could be a fake. Otto Long could have been the victim of identity theft. So I reported the site to Namebay.com, the hosting provider, and then googled Otto’s name. What do you know? There’s an Otto Long in TN and the address matched perfectly!

He’s also on Facebook:

He didn’t even try to hide his face!

So, I called the TN state police and alerted them of the site. I then fucked around with the info and let the site owner know they had been reported to both Namebay.com and the TN state police. Last, I sent a message to Mr. Otto Long III and informed him of the site. Hey, he COULD have a son or a daughter doing this and just happened to register the site in his name. I know for the first three years it was online, crimsonsparkle was registered to my dad, and I got a lot of angry emails addressed to ‘Mitch’ because that’s what was in the WhoIS, so I’m giving this man the benefit of a doubt. If it’s not his, he needs to control whoever is using his computer and credit card. If it is his, god help him. This shit is the scummiest thing anyone could do to fellow human beings.

Back in 2000, my mom got taken in on a scam like this, and I despise people who pull this kind of shit. She lost nearly $3000 before eBay stopped charging her card. It took us changing the card number and her mailing address before they would release the name of the person to the police.

I understand that times are tough and people are desperate, but fuck. If you’re going to buy a domain and pay for hosting, at least be honest and make a savekaren.com type thing. Ask for donations. Ask for gifts. Begging on the internet is still legal. Stealing is and never will be legal. Don’t. Fucking. Steal.

I’ll keep you all updated about this, IE: if he replies to my Facebook message. I have saved his information, his picture, my communication with him, so if I end up murdered, have the police investigate Otto Long of Old Hickory TN first.

The nerve of him! That’s amazing how you tracked him down. I had an identity theft situation where my email address was being used to purchase items with stolen credit card numbers (including one of mine). The orders were all for the same person, so I contacted the woman and it turns out she was a victim too. Her name was being used and the items were being shipped elsewhere. It was pretty easy to track her down though. This particular credit card theft was massive and thousands of people were affected in the same week! Unfortunately the real culprit was never caught.

That guy deserves to be caught and thrown to jail. I’ve family who has lost money from frauds like this before and this guy puts a face to that deed. Even if it wasn’t exactly him who conned them. Great detective work.
